Painting The Music w/ Dan Fisk & Friends

"Painting The Music" brings together four local musicians and four area painters for a showcase whereby the visual artist paints an entirely new work of art on stage with the singer-songwriter, using inspiration from the first song of each musician’s live set. The viewers’ energy becomes part of the art as audience members are encouraged to interact with the musicians and artists, becoming the third arm of a creative triad. The paintings will be auctioned off in the Lobby Bar during the hour long meet and greet immediately following the show.


Award-winning singer-songwriter, Dan Fisk writes beautiful melodies woven with soulful, witty lyrics that speak to his audience's heart. Rubbing the boundaries of both the singer-songwriter and country genres, Fisk transcends both with a unique, appealing sound. Critics have drawn comparisons to fellow Virginia natives Dave Matthews, Jason Mraz, and Pat McGee, yet Fisk's percussive, rhythmic guitar style is all his own. It is the foundation - and soul - of his music, forming the backbone of his rollicking country/rock tunes, sweet ballads, or songs of regret and sorrow.

Dan founded “Painting The Music” in 2012, and the event is now held as a regular performance series at different locations and cities. The show has also appeared at The Atlas Theatre and The Dunes in DC, The Franklin Park Performing Arts Center in Purcellville, VA, Gallery 5 in Richmond and the Village at Leesburg.


Kipyn Martin is an emerging Americana singer/songwriter whose roots sink into the banks of the Shenandoah River. Her voice is gathering a reputation in the region, hailed by listeners as "an instrument of unrefined purity" (Tony S.- Leicester Bangs) and "the most pure voice I've ever heard" (Karin Fuller- The Charleston Gazette). She currently plays festival stages in Virginia and Maryland and delights audiences at vineyards, coffeehouses, and house concerts throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

In February 2013 Kipyn celebrated the release of her debut album, Undercover Muse. Offering an authentic representation of Kipyn's live performances, Undercover Muse is a strictly acoustic project. "Martin's voice is just captivating, and engulfs the listener in warm, complex tones," acclaims Tony S. of Leicester Bangs. More recently Kipyn performed several showcases at the 2013 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) Conference in New York.

Placing in the NewSong Academy Songwriting Competition inspired Kipyn to pursue a Master of Music degree which she attained from Shenandoah Conservatory in 2012. Most recently her song "Nightbird" earned a gold medal, as well as the Director's Choice Award, in the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest. She also received international distinction in the 2013 UK Song Contest when "I Believe in You" from Undercover Muse earned a semi-finalist rating. An honesty and vitality of voice make this woman a performing artist not to be missed.


A native of Washington, DC, Stefan Alexander has spent the last 10 playing shows up and down the East Coast at The Knitting Factory, Arlene’s Grocery, Sullivan Hall, The Rock & Roll Hotel, The Velvet Lounge, and Blues Alley. Spending 3 years in Los Angeles, he played on the stages of The Roxy Theatre, The Good Hurt, Witz End, and The House of Blues (Residency; Sunset Blvd).

Alexander’s recent awards and achievements include national radio play for his acoustic single “Two Cents”, first place in John Mayer’s Side Stage Warfare Competition (Boston), and winner of Emergenza’s Audience Choice Award (DC).


Ute Gil is known for her pet portraits and her loose, impressionistic style. Born and raised in Germany, she has lived in Spain, Holland, and several states in the US, and currently resides in Northern Virginia with her husband. Her work is inspired by the many places she has lived and traveled to and by the workshops she has attended from Kurt Schwarz, Sara Linda Poly, Diane Tesler, and Magie Siner. The weekly plein air painting sessions with the Loudoun Sketch Club continue to introduce her to new ideas.


Born in Pueblo, Colorado in 1954, Fae has created distinctive and highly acclaimed work in watercolor, oil, and drawing mediums for over 30 years. A great deal of her artistic inspiration was due in part to growing up next to a library and university that supplied constant visual stimuli and a desire to imitate other artists. From grade school to the present, she have taken every opportunity to further develop her skills to portray work that has depth and exemplifies the essence of spiritual bonding between artist and subject.


Josh Yavelberg found a passion for the arts at an early age; he began attending figure-drawing classes as well as open drawing sessions at the University of Miami. He focused on these sessions until the end of his high-school career when he was accepted into the Fine Arts program at Pratt Institute.

While incorporating his knowledge of Art History with his artwork, the dominant theme throughout his body of work seems to be a depiction of life as he experiences it. It attempts to search for the essence in capturing the interaction of people and space with emphasis on themes of light, perspective, color, gesture, medium and size. The main goal has been to provide the viewer with an opportunity to interact and connect with his works of art while expressing the world from a unique point of view.

Yavelberg intends to continue his education and grow as an artist, as he continues his doctorate work in high education, specializing in the arts. With this he keeps the simple goal of obtaining knowledge of technique thorough research and viewing of the masters of art history, he has continued to create.
