Washington D.C. Dive Bars
|
|
Hands down, the best way to truly get to know a city is to visit its dive bars. Dives are the places where the locals go after a long day, where there’s no pressure to look cute or to impress anyone. Dive bars, in their plucky nature, also have no need to appease anyone or to fit into any category, so it’s common to walk into one to find an odd atmosphere that seems to be a blend of a lounge, a goth bar and a billiards bar. In Washington DC, dive bars are the place to find a tired member of congress hiding on the corner barstool drowning his hectic day woes in a cheap cocktail and chatting with the other regulars.

Asylum
2471 18th St., NW, Washington, D.C.; Tel. 202.319.9353
Harley-Davidson motorcycles, gothic décor and heavy metal are all present at Asylum, a popular biker hangout in the Adams Morgan district. You might walk into this Washington, D.C., bar and expect to see Ozzy himself throwing back a few cold ones. There's no confusing this Dracula-like lair with a typical American biker bar—wood paneling and Confederate flags are replaced by mirrors framed with skulls and bones, as well as broadswords, suits of amour and iron lanterns. But you don't have to be dressed in leather or sporting tattoos to appreciate the $0.25 Miller High Life special on Saturday nights. An extensive vegan menu also makes this bar one of Washington, D.C.'s best alternative nightlife venues.
